Mozilla Labs (in partnership with IxDA and Johnny Holland) proposed the Design Challenge'09 with the following topics:
"Reinventing the tabs in the Navigator - How can we create, navigate and manage multiple sites within the same instance of a browser?”
It is very common among our users, currently have multiple tabs opened in the browser, running programs, Skype, MSN, social networking, e-mails and other applications in the same time. When we need to navigate between the tabs and still remember which position was the last tab that we’re doing searches, becomes a difficult thing to manage.
After some ideas, sketches and discussions at our meetings for brainstorming, we observed that the Rubik cube shows a non-linear multiple information represented in the squares or colors when ordered.
Therefore, we chose the Rubik cube as a metaphor for a navigation tool where each colour represents a group of websites. Yellow could be for social network, green for search, blue for financial, or whatelse the user wants. When the mouse slide over the face, thumbnails of corresponding websites roll down. When do you click on the cube, you can change the face. The face could be maximized, showing more options too.
The idea is divided into three navigation possibilities:
Between chocolates, pizzas, discussions and ideas, we finally closed our idea for the Design Challenge'09.
